Blue Egg (Oocyan – O) Genetic Test
Identify carriers and confirm, the genetic source of blue or green eggshell pigmentation.
$14.00

This PCR-based DNA test detects the Oocyan (O) allele, which causes the natural deposition of biliverdin and zinc chelates in the eggshell, resulting in blue or blue-green pigmentation. This test distinguishes between non-carriers, carriers, and chickens that will pass the blue egg gene to offspring.

The blue egg trail is caused by the autosomal dominant O allele. Only one copy is needed to produce blue pigmentation inside the shell. Chickens carrying O will lay blue or green eggs, depending on the presence of brown overlay genes. This test determines whether a chicken is:
-
O/O – Homozygous Blue
-
O/o – Heterozygous Carrier of Blue
-
o/o – Non-blue layer

This test does confirm:
-
Presence or absence of the Oocyan (O) allele
-
Zygosity (O/O vs O/o vs o/o)
-
Genetic basis of blue or green eggshell color

This test does NOT confirm:
-
Brown shell genes
-
Specific shades of blue, green, or olive
-
Bloom, speckling, or cuticle thickness traits
