Sample Type:
- Blood on the tip of a coffee filter cut into a triangle. DO NOT USE TOILET PAPER OR PAPER TOWEL as these products swell in the buffer tubes. Coffee filters are easily obtained at any store and are very inexpensive. You may use ANY type of coffee filter. Please see our SAMPLING PAGE for instructions and desired amount of blood needed.

Dried eggshell membrane: place a piece of dried membrane (crispy its so dry) in a ziplock bag labeled with the sample number. If the membrane is not completely dry before placing in the bag, it will grow mold and no longer be viable. Please make sure your membrane has plenty of pink/red color. We do suggest placing your bag with the membrane between two pieces of cardboard when you ship in an envelope. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY EGGSHELL PIECES.

Feathers (only accepted if the bird is 4+ months old to ensure viable DNA) . We need at least 6 freshly plucked feathers from each ratite, with mature quills (tips) like in the pictures here. Tape feathers with all quills at one end like below to keep quills from touching other feathers. If you do not have tape a rubber band will work. Placed in a ziplock bag labeled with the sample number.

Note: All feathers must be clean with no visible dirt or feces on feathers or in the bag.

Turnaround Time: Results are typically back the same day samples are received at the lab. Please allow 48 hours before reaching out about your results. You will receive an email once your samples have been logged into our computer system here at the lab. Please purchase a tracking number for your convenience of knowing when your sample will arrive.
