Because Emu and Ostrich are not sexually dimorphic at hatch, visual sexing is unreliable until maturity. DNA testing provides an accurate and early method to determine sex using a small, non-invasive sample. test amplifies sex-specific genetic regions and compares band presence to determine chromosomal sex. The method is highly accurate, does not change with age, and remains valid for the life of the bird.

Sample Type:

​Blood on the tip of a coffee filter or printer paper cut into a triangle. Please see our SAMPLING PAGE for instructions and desired amount of blood needed.

Dried eggshell membrane: place a piece of dried membrane (crispy its so dry) in a ziplock bag labeled with the sample number. If the membrane is not completely dry before placing in the bag, it will grow mold and no longer be viable. Please make sure your membrane has plenty of pink/red color.

Feathers (only accepted if the bird is 4+ months old to ensure viable DNA) . We need at least 10 freshly plucked feathers from each ratite, with mature quills (tips) like in the pictures here. Placed in a ziplock bag labeled with the sample number.
