Sample Collection
Blood Samples:
1: Cut a filter into roughly 1-2 inch triangle pieces. (You do not need this much blood but it gives room to hold the filter without touching the blood spot and a nice pointy tip to touch the blood drop with). ANY coffee filter will work. Including unbleached, brown filters. Paper will as well, however it does not hold or absorb the blood as well.
2: Using Pet clippers that have been cleaned with alcohol and wiped dry, slowly trim your birds toenail back until you see blood start to appear. You may need to "milk" the toe to get the blood to start to flow. Once you get a drop of blood pooling on the tip of the toenail, use the very tip of the filter to collect the blood.
3: It doesn't need to be a large area of blood on the filter, just make sure that corner is saturated decently.
4: Let your filter air dry a few seconds and place it in a ziplock snack or sandwich bag. Label your bag with a permanent marker 1, 2, 3.. etc.
5: Clean your clippers, hands, and any other equipment or supplies you are using and move to the next chick. Use a new bag for each sample, labeled with the sample number. (Make sure the alcohol is completely wiped dry and do not use bleach or Lysol wipes). Once you have all of your samples in your bags, add a piece of paper in with your package that has your name, email, number of samples, and your order date.
